Week 1 Blog

Hi everyone,

My name is Lucas Fujii. I’m from Mercer Island, WA. I am a freshman this year and I’m on the baseball team. I came to Knox College to play baseball and also pursue my interest of neuroscience. I like playing video games, hanging out with friends, and also helping my community out. I am apart of Phi Gamma Delta, and I joined because of their efforts to help the surrounding community. Back home I did some volunteer work like re-planting native plants to the forests, cleaning up garbage around the local parks and so much more. When I’m back at home I like to hang out in my backyard with all my friends. We play cornhole and axe-throwing a lot. We also like to bring our putters and chippers to my house and play on the putting green we have. During the summers my friends and I like to go swimming at my grandma’s house. We also have get togethers a lot where we bring our own food and just grill it. My favorite part is playing poker with my friends. We are all competitive so it’s super fun and high stakes when we play. Since there are a lot of Native American reservations in Washington, I like to go the casino a lot. I play poker there and blackjack as well.

I look forward to learning more about Native American history. In Washington state history and my elementary school, we learned actually a good amount of knowledge. I even remember that they taught us some stuff about one of the native languages, Lushootseed. I think it’s interesting to learn about the people that were here before us and how they lived off the land. I also want to learn how we have drastically changed their lives with all our treaties and relocation. We have also had Native Americans come speak to us and bring items with them. In high school, we barely talked about Native Americans. All we really learned was the Trail of Tears and Navajos in the war. When I was younger, we had to make a scale model of house off the Duwamish Tribe.
