The importance of creation stories can be seen in the sense of information being provided to people who might have not known of the Native American history. These instances of the beginning and the start of their life is really interesting and add to the uniqueness and richness of their history. Being able to listen to these creation stories adds to the significance, we can get visual representations of what they are talking about and it also creates that feeling of being part of history by taking a look at the environment in which they have grown. I personally prefer listening to these creation stories since it helps to pronounce certain words but also because I am able to learn from someone telling me the story and not by reading and making up my perspective of the situations in which they grew. The Creation Story of Lakota Emergence was very interesting since it shows the way that there are believers and there is people who get influenced by their surroundings. The idea of going after the meat and entering Earth at the wrong time really increased the perspective of trust and their evolution. While the rest decided to stay put until they were told to enter Earth really embraced the idea of unity that Native Americans have and maintain.
The significance of migration has also stood out, the importance of adaptability has also been seen to take part in their history, and being able to move with nature and increase the possibility of survival also made way to these rich stories. Being able to move around and take in the interactions they had with other landscapes to have a deeper sense of the importance of nature in their lives. Adapting to nature and their surroundings really makes interesting methods to carry on stories from generation to generation and continue their history.
Hi Israel!
There is something so powerful about listening to stories rather than reading them– it creates more of an authentic experience as well as a connection between the speaker and listener. The Lakota emergence story was also one of my favorites! I especially liked how the story was told at the site of the Wind Cave, which is now a national park site. It was cool to see the passageway, as well as how it “shrunk” after people passed through– preventing further passage between worlds. I’ve heard that if you go to the Wind Cave you can hear the winds passing through the rocks and it sounds like breathing– must be a pretty cool phenomenon!
