What stood out to me the most was how similar the origins of all three stories were. One striking similarity is the presence of the number four, in both the Cherokee and Hopi creation tales. The Cherokee story features birds flying in four directions while the Hopi legend describes four individuals emerging from a cave each beginning their journey. Additionally both the Lakota and Hopi tribes trace their beginnings back to the earth itself sharing the similarity of coming up to earth. I also found the practice of herding buffalos off cliffs interesting because not only does it demonstrate resourcefulness, it also shows an understanding of nature. In my opinion it’s important to pay attention to these stories because they offer more than words and find it easier to relate and actually visualize the story.

Hi Ethan!
Thank you for these thoughts. It is really interesting to think about the similarities shared between different creation stories, even if those communities are thousands of miles apart! They often share many of the same structural elements (such as the notion of upper and lower levels of worlds), but might vary on smaller details. I especially liked how the NPS ranger who told the Lakota emergence story said that the smaller details don’t matter as much (and its’ a reality of passing down these stories orally), but the larger messages and themes are what’s most important.
