As this week’s topics have opened my mind to a better understanding of Native American history, they have also complicated my understanding of these accounts as they challenge the more simplistic or idolized versions of these narratives offered by mainstream media. Discussion surrounding the First Thanksgiving and Pocahontas often offer romanticized versions of history, obscuring the reality of colonization, violence, and cultural aspects of history. In “Benjamin West, Penn’s Treaty with the Indians (1771-72)”, it depicts a scene of political harmony and settlement but in the true of it all, the painting was far from the reality of the relationship between the colonists and the natives. The painting fails to show the complex dynamics of power play which ultimately led to the unequal distribution of land and resources that ultimately led to the dispossession of Native American lands. It also lacks individuality and agency by instilling a stereotypical image of Native Americans and perpetuating a Eurocentric perspective that diminishes the complexity of native culture and overlooks their diversity. Furthermore, the piece serves a political purpose as it promotes a particular perspective of colonial history downplaying the violence inflicted upon the communities of Native Americans. By considering this piece, it is clear that it is important to understand the complexity of history as it can offer many perspectives and diverse accounts of events. In taking into account the complex experiences and encounters of history, it allows for a more diverse understanding which moves past simplistic views, fosters empathy, and allows for the confrontation of the uncomfortable truths of the past. Additionally, acknowledging the mistakes of the past helps avoid making the same mistakes that were made. By understanding the multifaceted causes and consequences of these historical events, humanity can more effectively address contemporary issues and strive toward a more just and equitable society in the future. In the end, grappling with the complexity of history through readings and discussions enriches the understanding of the past and its relevance to our present. By critically engaging with diverse perspectives and challenging simplistic narratives, we can uncover the truth and learn valuable lessons for the future.
