Blog 7

For week seven, our focus was on the Four Views Project. On Monday, we were supposed to go to the archive and visit with Joeseph. In History of Education, we did a project in the archive and I enjoyed it a lot. The basis of it was to go through the history of Knox and find a way that the education at Knox changed, that change either being positive or negative. I focused on ADA, or the Americans with Disabilities Act, and how that changed the outlook on education at Knox and even, how it changed the way faculty at Knox designed their classes. One of the main sources I looked at was the TKS, the student newspaper, and articles written advocating for changes on campus to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities. It was cool to look deeper into what people were thinking before, during, and after the passing of the ADA and how the campus as a whole reacted to what was going on in the broader terms of America. We didn’t get to go to the archive for this project, but if we did, it would’ve been another cool experience. For the project itself, I always wanted to focus on a painting, specifically from a native painter. The painting I chose, Two Native Boys, depicts two young native men painting in front of a fire. The light from the fire provides the perfect backdrop for the boys. The different views I used, the two boys’ perspectives, the fire, and the artist, give context to the painting itself as viewers. I gave the possible thought process and point of view of both boys and maybe what they were painting and why they were painting it. I hypothesized that the boys may come from different groups of natives and do not speak the same language and this is a way for them to communicate. When I tried to find more information on the artist of the painting, I could not find a single thing about him other than that he himself was an indigenous person who was part of the Hopi people. Not finding any information would track because it is usually hard to find records of native people who were alive during this time. I am excited to get back into the classroom next week, which will be week 8 already! How time flies!
