Throughout the discussions and readings throughout the week one similar topic stood out to me more than any other. The colonizing mindset of the English settlers of the Native American lands is prevalent through most of the sources and events we have looked at this week. One of my favorite ones was the comparison of the etching and painting copy of Pocahontas because it allowed me to think and consider how often the misinterpretation of some historical accuracies allows for the complexity of history. It shows the reality of the situation, not in a literal sense, but in a sense where in both the painting and etching of Pochahontas, the English had depicted her in the manner of their culture. She was portrayed in the works in English style clothing, and in the painting, is shown to be even more different in appearance. Her skin was extremely pale and her features were pictured as much smoother than the etching, which tends to be more accurate comparatively. I believe that is what makes it important to learn about complexities such as these, because without the context that we have, these portraits would not give us an accurate representation of who Pochahontas actually was. For me something like this complicates my understanding of history in a fortunate way. Learning about implications such as these or other types of complexities shrouds my learning and comprehension with a little bit of doubt, which tends to open up more enriching and intriguing ways to look at different historical sources and depictions such as the ones of Pochahontas. Even within readings it allows for the process of critically thinking through the context of the source like who wrote it, when did it take place, where did it take place. By analyzing these sources with that natural doubt the context and comprehension that I would gain would be drastically different than if I did not have a sense of doubt when approaching a topic or reading. I think that almost every source that we learn about can be thought about in a more expansive way by any person in their own unique way and in doing so, enhances everyone’s understanding.
