Blog Post #9 Destined manifestations of colonial power

One way to consider manifest destiny as destined that I think is particularly interesting is to look back to the Doctrine of Discovery. This doctrine set in place by the pope at the time stated that all of the new world that was being discovered belonged to the Spanish crown. Preordained by God and the catholic church. This land belonged to the European people not purely in a political sense but also a religious one. Though the Spanish royals did not keep power over the entirety of this land it was still destined to belong to white men. This idea of the land belonging to European descendants continued centuries later in manifest destiny. It was, to them, their god given right, privilege, and duty to expand westward. To impose their religious and secular culture onto the Native population. Manifest destiny changed the way that the American people and government interacted with native people, this required policy changes to reflect the shifting attitudes. As the government urged people to move westward and settle throughout the territories it now controlled there was a necessary shift in the attitudes of those people. No longer could the government ignore the presence of native people beyond the boundaries of the Appalachians or the Mississippi, they were cohabitating this space. They could also not completely wipe out the population that existed there, the resources and human cost would be far too great. The size of the government and population was indeed also growing and becoming more solidified and disputes could not be dealt with purely by those communities that decided to settle, especially not with the government and natural incentives that pushed people westward. Because they could not ignore or eliminate the population here they had to change their approach than the one that had existed. The U.S. government decided to place the responsibility of affairs with Native American groups into a newly formed department for this purpose. The Department of the Interior was created. The government began to control the Native population less on the basis of extinction and more on that of isolation.
